What is a scabbard holster?

Scabbard style gun holsters are Outside the WaistBand ( OWB) holsters designed to be worn on the belt. The main difference between Scabbard and Pancake holsters is that the scabbard design has one belt loop on one side and another belt loop on the back of the holster, which prevents the holster from collapsing after drawing the gun ( Pancake style holsters tend to collapse after drawing the gun). Scabbard holsters for semi-auto handguns also feature a second layer of leather reinforcement at the top which makes it easier to reholster with one hand. For this reason scabbard style holsters are ideal for competitive shooting where fast drawing and reholstering is important.

How do I choose the right scabbard gun holster for my firearm?

It is important to make sure that the scabbard holster selected is made for the right gun make and model with the right barrel length. For safety considerations, make sure the holster covers the trigger guard and the barrel completely. Most holsters are made for the bare gun frame, so if you have aftermarket accessories installed on your gun such as raised sights, optics, laser or light attachments, contact the holster maker to find out if the holster will work with those installed. Note that leather holsters may initially fit snug and may require breaking in, see our guidelines on how to break in a leather holster.

Can I conceal carry with a scabbard gun holster?

Scabbard style gun holsters are typically designed for open carry with the purpose of fast and easy drawing and reholstering. However, they can be concealed under loose clothing, a coat or a jacket. While their design makes them appear smaller than other OWB designs like Pancake, Scabbard holsters may print more than Pancake holsters under clothing.
